Treatment options at Healthlink Care

Shockwave therapy & Ultrasound therapy

Shockwave therapy

We offer shockwave therapy at our Castle Hill clinic. Your practitioner will assess your concern and discuss whether it is a suitable option alongside your rehabilitation plan.

Ultrasound therapy

We offer therapeutic ultrasound, which uses sound waves applied through a handheld treatment head. This is a treatment service, not a diagnostic ultrasound scan. Suitability and evidence depend on the condition being treated.

Read the research

Before treatment, we discuss expected benefits, limitations, risks and alternatives. Your plan is individual, and results vary.

Research behind your care

Selected research on specific treatments and conditions, with links to the original papers or their freely available summaries. These studies are not studies of our clinic, and cannot predict your individual result. Some publishers charge for full text.

Shockwave therapy

Focused shockwave therapy for chronic plantar fasciitis

Gollwitzer et al. · 2015 · Randomised trial

In a trial of 250 people with persistent plantar heel pain, focused shockwave therapy reduced pain more than placebo at 12 weeks. Temporary pain and swelling were reported. This study used a particular focused device and protocol; its findings do not apply to every shockwave device or condition.

Ultrasound therapy

Therapeutic ultrasound for chronic low back pain

Ebadi et al. · 2020 · Cochrane review

This review found little evidence supporting ultrasound for chronic non-specific low back pain. Benefits were uncertain and much of the evidence was low certainty. This is a reason to discuss the evidence for your particular condition and consider alternatives.

Chiropractic care

Spinal manipulation for chronic low back pain

Rubinstein et al. · 2019 · BMJ systematic review

Spinal manipulation produced similar pain relief to other recommended therapies and a small short-term improvement in function. This is evidence for one treatment used in chiropractic care for chronic low back pain, rather than all chiropractic treatments. Harms were incompletely reported; discuss benefits, risks and alternatives with your practitioner.

Physiotherapy care

Exercise therapy for chronic low back pain

Hayden et al. · 2021 · Cochrane review

Exercise probably reduces chronic low back pain compared with no treatment, usual care or placebo. Improvements in function were smaller. Exercise is one part of physiotherapy; these results do not establish the benefit of every physiotherapy treatment. Reported adverse effects were mostly minor, such as muscle soreness.

When to seek urgent medical care

New bladder or bowel changes, numbness around the groin, sudden weakness or severe pain after a major injury need urgent medical assessment. In an emergency, call 000.
